COURSE DESCRIPTION
The purpose of the program is to provide the student with entry-level skills in Word and Data Processing.
During the eleven months, the following areas of study are taught:
The program consists of classroom theory and actual "hands-on" experience with data processing equipment, including the IBM personal computer (PC), and with the IBM Electronic Typewriter.
OPEN ENROLLMENT
A student may elect to take a single subject in the quarter in which it is offered. Fractional credit will be given for the subject based on the time in class as offered to the full-time students.
COLLEGE CREDIT
An articulation agreement between West Virginia State Community College and Benjamin Franklin Career Center provides for college credit to be granted upon successful completion of the four quarter program at Ben Franklin with at least a "C" average in all the subject areas. Students who meet the admission requirements will receive advanced placement in associate degree programs of the community college component. The amount of college credit may vary.
SCHEDULE
Classes meet from 8:20 a.m. until 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday for eleven months. Classes begin in August and end in June.
Programs are run in compliance with the Kanawha County Schools' calendar in regards to holidays and other school closings with the exception of June.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Students must be 18 years of age or older and out of high school at least one semester or have a high school diploma or its equivalent. However, successful program exit requires a diploma or GED before a certificate will be issued.
COST
Tuition is based on the total clock hours in the class and textbooks are required. There is also a $10 registration fee which must be paid by all registrants. The tuition and books are subject to change.
CERTIFICATION
Each quarter is self-contained and a certificate will not be issued for electing to take less than a complete program.
A certificate will be issued as long as a student has meet the attendance requirement as well as completion of all four quarters of course work with an overall "C" average. A student upon completion will have an option of transferring credit to theWest Virginia State Community College.
Students will be required to participate in the work experince training conducted during enrollment in this program. Students in this course must obtain 55 hours supervised hands-on training in a long-term care facility performing a variety of duties and skills learned in the classroom setting.
Students are evaluated every nine weeks on written and performance tests and must maintain a "C" average each semester.
Successful graduates of this program will be issued a Kanawha County Schools Vocational Permit and will be eligible to sit for the Certified Nursing Assistant Exam conducted by the State of West Virginia.
